Incredible Edibles Programme at Airfield
Airfield’s education team have designed an educational experience to support and enhance
Agri Aware’s ‘Incredble Edibles’ Programme, by offering a ‘hands on’ experience that will bring the cycle of food production to life in an exciting way.
A field trip to Airfield will provide students with a practical and inspiring day on a working farm, giving them the opportunity to participate in the work schedule led by our Farmer and Head Gardener. Through ‘hands on’ activities, including close contact with animals and working allotments they will see the cycle of food production –‘from farm to fork’ and the relevance and importance that agriculture has for day to day life.
Airfield’s unique resource as a working farm located in the city will provide for many children to have the experiential learning opportunity advocated by the current Primary curriculum. They will also learn the importance of a balanced diet through a range of practical and fun activities related to the food pyramid including preparing and eating simple foods in our classroom.

Education through the Seasons at Airfield
Here at Airfield Autumn is a busy time as we get ready for the long Winter months. Soon preparation for feeding and bedding will begin and the animals will gradually move to their winter housing. It also means the return of our seasonal schools programmes. Over the next term students will explore the changing face of the land at Airfield as winter approaches.
Airfield delivers a range of high quality opportunities for students of all ages. It is an accredited Discover Primary Science Centre with programmes relating closely to SESE curricula. Children are encouraged to use their own curiosity and powers of investigation to discover the beauty and rhythms of nature and its relevance to their lives.
This term we are delighted to continue our partnership with Agri-Aware, delivering a programme designed here at Airfield to compliment their ‘Incredible Edibles’ programme in schools. Here children are immersed in the workings of our farm and garden in a celebration of agriculture and food production. Airfield sees this ‘farm to fork’ experience as an important part of our educational remit as many children and indeed adults are disconnected from how our food is produced.
Our second level students offerings include our Transition Year programme where students can spend a day in the fresh air at Airfield participating in our practical Horticulture and Farm Studies and our Leaving Cert Ecology Field Studies programme which enables biology students to complete the mandatory fieldwork requirements of the Ecology module and write up the required reports.
Our education programmes are based outdoors come rain or shine so please make sure to dress appropriately. Rain coats and wellies are essential. Demand is high so please book early. Contact Paula@airfield.ie to book or for details of individual programmes.
We look forward to seeing you soon.
