Key features include:

  • Flexibility to meet individual needs of schools and children
  • Programmes are based outdoors with hand-on activities
  • Resources are available for teachers to help prepare for the visit
  • Trained child centred guides
  • Covered activity and lunch facilities
  • All areas are wheelchair accessible

Be A Nature Detective

Go beneath the surface of the pond and hedgerows to find out what lives around Airfield Estate. Using detective skills, we will hunt for bugs, mini-beasts, birds and pond dwellers as well as some of our larger farm animals. Will will explore the natural environment at Airfield and discover and how we can use playtime to understand the great outdoors.

Fantastic Farming

Using Airfield Estate’s working farm, we will begin to look at the seasonality of the farm, the daily work of the farmer and the animals which they tend to. Airfield’s Jersey herd will help us understand the story of milk from grass to glass. This programme will aid students in understanding the importance of farming in Ireland.

Let's Get Growing

Using the extensive variety of plants at Airfield, we will explore the different types of plants that exist, what they need to grow, how to sow seeds and the seasonality. We will also investigate what plants do for us and the importance of pollinators. By delving into the magical world of plants we also discover how food is created and gets onto our plates.

Once Upon A Time At Airfield

By telling the story of the Overend sisters, Letitia and Naomi, and their family we can explore a time long ago. Playing in the house, formal gardens and on the lawns allows us to experience life in another era. Our trained and experienced guides will take us on a journey through a ‘day in the life’ of a Victorian child exploring the heritage of the Overend family home at Airfield with simple games, storybooks and dress up.

Be Creative (Primary Schools Only)

During selected weeks in the year, Airfield Artists will be brought into facilitate the Be Creative programme. Airfield Estate is a peaceful place and can be used to encourage children to take the time to listen to themselves and explore how they feel about the world, nature and their place in it. Using the different colours and textures of Airfield along with a wide variety of media we encourage children to express themselves and let their creativity and imagination run wild.

Summer Tours (Primary Schools Only)

Our summer tours are filled to the brim with fun and hands-on activities. Bug hunting, pond dipping, seed sowing as well as learning about the history of Airfield Estate. Within this tour we also incorporate play whether that be in our orchard maze, onto of our fairy mound or down in our naturescape playground.
