Winter Warmers
Tour Details:
Winter Warmers – Primary School Short Winter Visits
Our new Winter Warmers programme offers primary schools a short visit option during the winter month: the guided element of the visit is 1.5hrs long and includes access to the site (including playground) after the guided section of the visit is over. If you wish to stay onsite following the guided element of the visit, then the visit is suitable for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays (we are closed to the public on Mondays so cannot allow self-guided visits on Mondays).
Each Winter Warmers option consists of a short tour and a hands-on workshop in our NEFF Inspiration Kitchen, where children can enjoy produce from our garden. See options below:
Option 1: Garden tour and Vegetable Soup
The students will begin their visit in our NEFF Inspiration Kitchen, where they will learn all about the produce that we harvest from our organic food garden. There will be a chance to chop herbs from our organic food garden and add them to a big pot of vegetable soup (made fresh using seasonal and local produce). There will also be an observational drawing activity. The whole class will then get a chance to try the fresh vegetable soup.
After warming up on homemade soup, the students will be taken on a guided tour through our organic food garden, learning about what a plant needs to grow, the life cycle of a plant, and how we can take care of wildlife in our green spaces.
This visit option can take place any time of day.
Option 2: Farm tour and Hot Chocolate
The children will be taken on a guided tour of our farmyard, meeting our Jersey dairy herd of cows, and learning about the different parts of a cow’s body. They will get a chance to see our cows being milked and learn about the process of pasteurisation. The other animals that the students will meet include our donkeys, sheep, chickens, and pigs.
Following the farmyard tour, the students will then visit our NEFF Inspiration Kitchen and, working in pairs, will make hot chocolate. The children will use thermometers to monitor the temperature of the milk and then learn how to create the perfect hot chocolate. During the workshop, the children will also learn about the life cycle of cows, including how and why cows produce milk.
For this visit option, we recommend an arrival time between 9:30am – 10am, to arrive in time to see our milking at 10:30am.
